Codenames: A Game of Clever Clues
Codenames is a great party wordplay and deduction board game that is really making it big at all sorts of gatherings. It has been created by Vlaada Chvátil and is a team-based game. On every team, one player acts as the spymaster. The team leaders give out one-word clues that relate to multiple words on the board. The other team members need to solve the clue and determine which words are the right color without guessing the other team’s words or the game-ending assassin. Codenames is a game of excruciating simplicity and brilliance. The object of the game is to get your team to guess multiple items on a board with a clue that refers to a connection without hitting on those of your opponents and the word represented by the assassin, which brings the game to an immediate end. I remember a game night where our team was on fire, and we got around five words with a single clue. The tension and excitement built with each guess culminated in a nail-biting finish where we successfully avoided the assassin word and won the game. Codenames is perfect for any party in a way that it’s going to stir up teamwork, creativity, and quick thinking.

Telestrations: The Game of Telephone, With a Slightly Demented Twist

Telestrations is an uproarious party game that cleverly mixes drawing and guessing to guarantee you the most laughs. An interesting factor is that every player has to get a word or phrase and draw it in his or her sketchbook. The book is then passed off to the next player, who will draw the previous player’s guess and then guess what the last player’s drawing is supposed to mean. And once the books make it around the table, that first word or phrase is often mangled into something not just different but very different and very, very silly. But one of the best things about Telestrations is how great and funny drawing and guessing become. Sketching a “space alien” along the way turns into a “dancing banana,” and all are hooting and howling by the end. It involves pretty easy game rules and really fast rounds, rewarding, in general, everyone across all ages and drawing skills. Telestrations is the ideal icebreaker for any party that can be thrown, leaving only laughter and camaraderie shared among your friends and family.

Just One: The Cooperative Word Game

Just One is a cooperative party game where players have to work it out with each other in order to guess different words based on clues that are only one word. In a round, one player becomes a guesser, whereas other players will write one-word clues in an endeavor to assist the guesser in deducing the secret word. However, if any of the clues are identical, they are canceled out, making it more difficult for the guesser. Just One will certainly be an instant favorite among all players because it depends on making unique and good clues without overlapping with other players’ clues. The mental pressure of wondering if your clue will be cancelled out plays with the rush of a successful guess to make one of the best, most addictive games. One game night, we were close to guessing every single word, mostly neck and neck, because of our clever and unique clues. The teamwork and sense of accomplishment were more than rewarding. Just One is an awesome party game. It involves teamwork, creativity, and quick thinking.

Spyfall: The Game of Deception and Deduction
Spyfall is a party game where players must identify the spy. Every round, all the players receive a card with a location and a role on it. All the cards are the same, save for the one card swapped out by the spy card. The players then ask each other questions, trying to figure out who knows the location and who is bluffing. The spy’s job is to avoid being caught and figure out the location, while creativity abounds in Spyfall with the questions and answers that players devise to show knowledge or ignorance. Tension rises as the spy tries to stay undercover and remain undiscovered. One game I can remember most is when I was the spy, and not once did I ever be outed, all by answering at the perfect time in the perfect way. This tension, combined with the thrill that is consistently Spyfall,  makes for a great game.

Dixit: A Game of Imagination and Storytelling

Dixit is a beautiful and imaginative party game that encourages creativity and storytelling. One by one, each player plays a card from their hand as they give a hint or clue about it—a word, phrase, or perhaps even a story inspired by the image on their card. The other players look for a match in their hands, and all of them are jumbled and exposed. In the last step, each player votes on whose card they believe belongs to the storyteller. The trick in Dixit is to give a clue that is not blatantly obvious in revealing, while at the same time it shouldn’t be too obscure, because the score for being a storyteller is based on at least some, but not all, other people guessing your card. The awesome artwork and vague clues in this game make every one of its turns different and stunningly exciting.

The biggest moment in this game is when you flip the cards and you finally see all the creative, and at times downright funny, interpretations of the clues. An adventure, how can something as simple as this have cards with a rowdy knight in the midst of his battle with a dragon and cards with rainbows? This makes Dixit well suited to parties, and the imaginative and creative tanks it fills leave room for laughter and storytelling. The game is very simple and has good material components, making it accessible to all basic ages and levels.

Wits & Wagers: Trivia Party Game of Chance

Wits & Wagers is a trivia game, but with a twist: you don’t have to know the answers in order to win. For every question that comes up, players have to write their guesses down on a card. This is then thrown into the collective pot, and in the final rounds, the closest answer is where players have to put their bids. So, a player who bets judiciously and stacks up those points goes on to win. Wits & Wagers is fun because of the wide range of questions and the way the betting mechanic works. Even if you are not able to guess the answer, you may win the bet because somebody else has bet on another guess. And everybody loves it, and the quick rounds make this a winner at parties. I mean, I can’t remember how many people told me every single person they played it with loved the game, and the fast rounds make this a hit at parties. I remember one game night, and there was a question on the tallest roller coaster, and man, our group was stumped. But literally, those guesses were all over the place, and the strategic betting in anticipation of the right answer really kept everybody on edge. Wits & Wagers is a trivia-like game perfectly suited for parties with strategic betting. Everyone can join the game and enjoy it, regardless of their trivia knowledge.

Codenames: Duet: A Co-Operative Twist

For a more intimate party setting or a game night with a smaller group, Codenames: Duet offers a cooperative twist on the original Codenames formula. Codenames Duet is a cooperative twist on the original Codenames formula, designed for more intimate settings at a party or during a game night with a smaller group. The duet version has two players trying to find all their agents before time runs out by using one-word clues and some unusually clever guessing. Its cooperation makes Codenames Duet perfect for couples or sets of friends who are up for a difficult yet engaging game. The added tension of the clock working against you and the necessity of communicating properly make it an edgy and absorbing game. One of the most exciting game nights my partner and I have had was playing this game, finding nearly all of our agents, and leaving ourselves with only one last turn to go, with a very well-placed clue and some supernaturally good guessing. The feeling of achievement and joy derived from the interaction between us was priceless.
